Hali didn’t put up a fight when Gray chose Gaspar’s Grotto for dinner. It had a pirate theme—which she always found funny—and the location was fun and fresh.

“I’m starving,” Rusty announced as he perused the menu. He seemed up for whatever adventure was thrown at him. “You should’ve chosen a steakhouse.”

“I’m happy with my choice,” Gray replied crisply. He’d been trying to maintain his annoyance with Hali—opting to stay at the tiki bar throughout her entire shift so he could glare—but he was having trouble following through. She was just too cute, and he loved her too much. Maintaining annoyance was nowhere near as easy as he was expecting.

“It’s a perfect choice,” Hali agreed. She was going to take his side no matter what, although she loved the menu at Gaspar’s. “You’re fine.”

Gray gave Hali a sidelong look. “You’re not winning points with me simply because you take my side,” he warned.

Hali knew that wasn’t true. She played along anyway. “I know. I was just being honest.”

Gray made a face and grumbled something she couldn’t quite make out under his breath. She was winning him over, which meant she had to hide her smile.

“I’m getting a drink,” Carrie warned Hali. “I know we’re going to be on a mission tonight, and that will include drinking at Bongos, but I want one now too.”

“I’m not your mother,” Hali said. “Although … that story you told this afternoon about our fake mothers being convinced the post office was out to get us was inspired. How did you even think of that?”

“One of my customers told me that story when talking about his mother a few days ago,” Carrie replied. “I have no problem stealing from others when it comes to inspiration.”

“No, it was a good choice.” Hali tapped her bottom lip. “I think I’m going to get a drink too.”

“Just one,” Gray stressed. “We need to have your wits about you tonight, for more than one reason. Your glamour has to pass muster, and if we have to run, you’re going to have to throw up a diversion spell.”

Hali patted his leg under the table. “I promise to keep my wits about me. I’ll protect you with everything I have.”

Gray scowled. “Did you have to phrase it like that?”

“Yup.”

“Of course you did.” Despite his best efforts, Gray’s lips twitched. “Since I’m driving, I’ll forego having a drink here. I’ll just have one at Bongos.”

“I’m going to drink everywhere,” Rusty said. “I’m going to stick to beer, though. That’s basically like not drinking at all.”

Gray made a face. “Um … not really.”

“Shh.” Rusty pressed his finger to his lips, sending his brother a smile that he knew Gray would find irritating. “We’re going on an adventure. You should try having a bit of fun.” He licked his lips as he surveyed the menu. “The crab quesadilla is calling my name.”

“See, I don’t think that crab and shrimp belong on a quesadilla,” Carrie said. “I’m getting the Clearly You’ve Never Been to Singapore wings and some fries.
